# How to Process Auth Only

1. **Access the Sale Screen** \
   After logging in, go to the Sale screen.
2. **Open the Menu** \
   Tap the blue banner at the top of the screen.
3. **Select Authorisation Only** \
   Choose Authorisation Only from the menu. You will return to the Sale screen, and above Enter Amount, it will now display Authorisation Only.
4. **Enter the Amount** \
   Type the amount you want to generate an Auth Code for.
5. **Proceed with Payment** \
   Press the green button or Next.
6. **Present the Card** \
   Insert, swipe, or tap the card when prompted.
7. **Receive the Auth Code** \
   Once the card is processed, the terminal will display the Auth Code.

This step only authorises the funds—it does not complete the payment.\
To ensure the payment reaches your bank:

* You must perform a [**Charge Only**](/p400-how-tos/how-to-process-charge-only.md) transaction later using the same Auth Code for the same amount.
* If this is not done, the authorisation will expire, and the customer’s funds will return to their account.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://helpcenter.verifone.com/p400-how-tos/how-to-process-auth-only.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
